The Canonical Linux Kernel Organization has teams across all time zones and is responsible for all supported Ubuntu Linux kernels on all platforms and architectures. We focus on hardware and virtualization enablement, security, reliability, and performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate regularly with a globally distributed team.
  • Work closely with external silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturers on cutting-edge platforms.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues in the kernel reported by customers and the community.
  • Take responsibility for delivering a version of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches.

Requirements:

  • Significant programming experience in C; experience with Python, Golang, or similar languages is a plus.
  • Familiarity with operating system kernel internals; Linux experience is highly regarded.
  • A solid background with Git and experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events.

Preferred Skills:

  • Understanding of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
  • Experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap software packaging formats.
  • Knowledge of Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycles.
  • Background in performance engineering and security.
  • Experience with CI/CD and process automation.
  • Prior public involvement with open source projects.
