We have a large and rapidly growing kernel team that supports Ubuntu and open source across a wide range of hardware and use cases. We collaborate with significant kernel contributors to ensure that their work reaches the broadest possible audience. Our team is responsible for all supported Ubuntu Linux kernels across various platforms and architectures, from small embedded devices to large-scale cloud environments.

This full-time, remote role requires an individual who can travel globally twice a year for company engineering events. Responsibilities include collaborating regularly with a globally distributed team, working closely with external silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturer delivery teams, diagnosing and resolving kernel issues, taking responsibility for the delivery of a flavor of the Ubuntu Linux kernel, and improving tooling and automation for testing and delivery. The ideal candidate has significant programming experience in C, knowledge of Python or similar languages, experience with operating system kernel internals, a solid background with Git and Linux, and is proficient in English both written and spoken.

Additional desirable skills include strong understanding of device drivers, prior experience with software packaging formats like Ubuntu/Debian/Snap, and familiarity with Linux kernel upstream processes.

Canonical offers competitive compensation with annual reviews, a performance-driven bonus, a personal learning budget, a distributed work environment with in-person team events, and benefits such as maternity and paternity leave, wellness programs, and travel opportunities.

At Canonical, we are committed to diversity and inclusion, ensuring a fair consideration of all applicants regardless of their identity as we continue to lead the global move to open source.
