About the Role
The Manager, Drive Unit is responsible for leading a team of up to six full-time engineers in the development of clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) based on the vision for the broader Resident Product Engineering group. This role involves mentoring employees through technical and organizational challenges, fostering talent development, and creating a thriving work environment for success. The Manager will collaborate with core engineering team leaders on workload prioritization, engineering decisions, and change management peer review/approvals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a team of product engineers to tackle product and multi-variable issues within the Drive Unit System, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.
  • Empower the team to solve complex component and system-level problems using standard problem-solving techniques and Design of Experiments (DoE).
  • Enforce a data-driven, proactive approach to problem-solving, conduct root cause analysis, and avoid issues due to process deviations or critical part quality issues.
  • Establish technical depth in Electric Drive Unit hardware and its interfaces with other systems within the team.
  • Create an environment of trust and efficiency within the team to deliver impactful results.
  • Manage conflicts and escalation from various functions in the plant with competing priorities.
  • Develop organizational processes and tools to improve productivity and enable the team to hold other plant functions accountable to meet design intent.
  • Empower the team to execute product change management addressing known compatibility or design issues for high-volume production in close collaboration with core hardware engineering and other cross-functional teams.

Skills

  • Experience with DFMEA, PFMEA, DVP&R, DFM, and RCA in cross-functional teams.
  • Previous leadership experience and familiarity with manufacturing environments.
  • Engineering-in-Training (EIT) or certification in engineering fundamentals.
  • Six Sigma Black Belt Certification.
  • RedX apprentice or Journeyman certification.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering with 10+ years of automotive experience in design and release of vehicle attributes, or a Master of Science degree with 8+ years of experience.
  • Experience in product problem-solving using methodologies like 8D, 7 Step, RedX, or DMAIC.
  • Experience setting clear KPIs and charters for teams from broader vision and mission statements.
  • Prior experience as a resident hardware engineer in a plant environment.
  • Technical depth in automotive drive unit assemblies and associated interfaces.
  • Proficiency in electric drive unit End-of-Line (EOL) functionality tests and dynamometer test specifications.
  • Experience in product development or improvements of electric drive units and gearboxes.
  • Proficient in Catia or 3DX, stack-up analysis (2D & 3D), and SQL.
  • Ability to coach and develop talent through technical and administrative challenges.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills using Atlassian products.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly/non-exempt employees accrue up to 120 hours of paid time off, and salaried/exempt employees accrue up to 160 hours.
