Position

The Center for Translational Medical Devices (CENTMED) at New York University Abu Dhabi is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate to focus on the Surface Chemistry of Implants and the Fabrication of Polymer Medical Devices. The successful applicant will work alongside faculty and researchers to improve the surface chemistry of implant materials, enhancing biocompatibility and osteointegration.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Surface modification of implants using methods such as plasma treatment, silanization, and specialty coatings for corrosion resistance.
  • Development of polymeric lubricious coatings for catheters to minimize vessel injury.
  • Characterization of surface modifications using techniques like Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).
  • Mapping the nanomechanical properties of implant surfaces, including adhesion, friction, Young’s modulus, and surface free energy via AFM.
  • Collaboration with clinicians to identify unmet clinical needs, design and develop medical device prototypes, and fabricate polymeric medical devices.
  • Preparation of ISO/ASTM test specimens for mechanical testing of polymers and composites using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM).
  • Estimation of glass transition temperatures of polymers via Dynamic Mechanical Analysis.
  • Involvement in the development of osteoconductive polymeric implants for skull base surgery.
  • Quantifying biomolecule adsorption on polymeric coatings, developing orthotic assistive devices from sustainable materials, and assisting in filing intellectual property rights related to medical device innovations.
  • Preparing technology documentation and facilitating the translation of innovations to industry.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Science. The ideal candidate should have expertise in:

  • Surface analysis of materials
  • Atomic Force Microscopy
  • Materials characterization
  • Analytical skills
