Principal Engineer - Frontend

About the Role
As Principal Frontend Engineer, you will set technical direction for the frontend systems behind production AI products and platforms. This position requires you to remain hands-on while defining architecture, strengthening design systems, improving performance and reliability, and raising engineering standards across teams. You will work closely with Product, Design, Backend, AI/ML, Security, and Platform Engineering teams to transform complex capabilities into clear, scalable user experiences.

Responsibilities

• Define and evolve frontend architecture across web applications, shared platforms, design systems, and backend-for-frontend integrations.
• Design and ship production-grade frontend systems using TypeScript, React, Next.js, and modern browser technologies.
• Establish patterns for modularity, state management, data fetching, routing, error handling, and component composition.
• Build and scale reusable component libraries and design systems that improve product consistency, accessibility, and delivery speed.
• Drive performance engineering across rendering, Core Web Vitals, profiling, code splitting, caching, and bundle optimization.
• Guide integration with REST APIs, GraphQL, WebSockets, server-sent events, and event-driven backend services.
• Define frontend testing strategy across unit, integration, component, end-to-end, and visual regression coverage.
• Improve frontend observability, reliability, and operational readiness through meaningful telemetry, error monitoring, and service-level thinking.
• Embed secure development practices across authentication, authorization, dependency management, browser security, and API consumption.
• Strengthen CI/CD and release workflows for frontend applications, including automated quality gates and repeatable deployment patterns.
• Lead architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical design discussions; mentor senior engineers and grow frontend technical leadership.
• Collaborate closely with Product and Design to make pragmatic technical decisions that improve customer outcomes without compromising long-term maintainability.
• Evaluate new frontend frameworks, AI-assisted engineering tools, and AI-powered interaction patterns when they offer credible product or engineering value.

Qualifications

• Strong frontend engineering fundamentals across JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, browser behavior, accessibility, and responsive application design.
• Experience shipping and operating complex production applications with React and Next.js; exposure to Angular or comparable frameworks is valuable.
• Demonstrated ability to make architecture decisions across large frontend codebases, shared libraries, and multi-team delivery environments.
• Practical experience building design systems and reusable component libraries with clear APIs, documentation, and governance.
• Strong understanding of SSR, SSG, client rendering, hydration, caching, performance profiling, and Core Web Vitals.
• Experience with state-management patterns and integration across REST, GraphQL, WebSockets, or event-driven services.
• A disciplined approach to automated testing using tools such as Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright, or Cypress.
• Sound judgment across security, reliability, maintainability, developer experience, and delivery speed.
• Strong debugging and communication skills, with the ability to lead through ambiguity and align engineers across functions.
• An ownership mindset and a track record of raising technical standards through design, implementation, review, and mentorship.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Vue.js, micro frontends, Module Federation, progressive web applications, or multi-tenant frontend platforms.
• Exposure to backend-for-frontend services, Node.js, cloud-native infrastructure, containers, or Kubernetes-based delivery environments.
• Experience building high-traffic, regulated, or high-availability enterprise applications.
• Exposure to AI-powered user experiences, LLM integrations, streaming interfaces, or human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Open-source contributions, published technical work, or experience leading frontend engineering communities.
