Principal Mechanical Engineer

About the Role
The role is focused on determining methods and solutions for complex engineering problems while selecting the most efficient and economical approaches to meet objectives. The position involves applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis, serving as a technical consultant, and providing discipline supervision for projects.

Key Accountabilities

• Business Development Support

  • Assist business development activities by maintaining an updated personal profile and resume.
  • Build positive relationships with external parties such as customers, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Support proposals by developing discipline execution strategies, estimating costs, writing proposal content, and presenting to customers.
  • Potentially lead all or part of the technical proposal.

• Business Operations

  • Communicate team resource loading and skill requirements to a supervisor or Discipline Manager.
  • Ensure project work is covered during vacations and unplanned absences.
  • Mentor/train others and assist in the employee performance review process.
  • Encourage compliance with requirements and processes and work to resolve inter-discipline, vendor, and customer issues.
  • Ensure that all technical work meets health, safety, environmental, and security requirements.

• Project Execution

  • Participate in project execution strategy and planning, coordinating with disciplines to ensure project success.
  • Implement innovative solutions and methods to address challenges.
  • Support management of project changes and collaborate with the Project Management Team on corrective actions as needed.
  • Monitor and ensure discipline quality and drive improvements.

• Project Deliverables

  • Gather data and prepare engineering studies, analyses, and recommendations.
  • Define technical issues, establish alternative solutions, and create final documentation for customer approval.

• Procurement Support

  • Incorporate information into equipment/material specifications and participate in bid clarifications and evaluations.
  • Review documentation to assist others and authorize work done by direct reports.

• Site Support

  • Collaborate with knowledgeable sources and site personnel to ensure requirements are incorporated into engineering/design.
  • Create plans or support documents that facilitate construction, testing, commissioning, or operations.

Technical Competency

• Ensure adherence to engineering practices, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.
• Expert knowledge in design and selection of rotating equipment for onshore oil and gas projects is essential.
• Familiar with concept, FEED, and detailed design phases, and procurement processes.
• Experience in projects within the Middle East is preferred.
• Ability to engage in client workshops on design review and HAZID/HAZOP discussions.
• Understanding of technical knowledge and codes such as API standards is required.
• Expert knowledge in the design and engineering of various types of rotating equipment.

Qualifications, Accreditation, Training

• Essential:
  • 4 or 5-year technical degree in science or engineering.
  • Trained in leadership and project execution with active licensing as required by law.
  • Typically have 15+ years of relevant discipline experience.
• Desirable:
  • Training in risk management or quality control.
  • Experience in project leadership or specialized expertise in regulatory standards.

Decision Making

• Make responsible decisions within company practices; complex decisions are referred to the Location Manager of Engineering or Discipline Manager.

Supervision Received

• Work is guided by broad objectives, with reviews ensuring policy compliance and coordination with other company departments.

Supervision Authority

• May oversee up to 10 direct reports; responsible for technical accuracy and adequacy, as well as performance evaluations impacting pay.

Communication

• Utilize mastery of discipline for informing and persuading on complex topics.

Systems & Tools

• Essential: Competent in Microsoft Office Suite and information retrieval systems.
• Desirable: Proficiency in Access and PowerPoint; knowledge of specialty engineering/design tools.
