About the Role
The Railway System Engineer is responsible for integrating, verifying, and optimizing railway systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. This role involves system-level thinking, covering rolling stock, signaling, infrastructure, power supply, and communication systems. The successful candidate will act as Testing & Commissioning Engineer for the project, collaborating with the System Engineering and System Assurance Engineers, referring to the T&C Manager and interfacing with the T&C Engineers of the subsystems involved in the development and construction of the whole railway system. Additionally, the role includes participating in the Site Acceptance Test campaign of subsystems, executing Site Integration and Performance Tests, and ensuring the successful finalization of T&C activities and the validation of the integrated railway system.

Key Accountabilities
A. Verification & Validation

  • Ensuring railway systems adhere to performance and characteristics required by project requirements, standards, and laws.
  • Managing all V&V activities, defining relevant plans, and monitoring the execution of these activities.
  • Monitoring execution of FAI, FAT, SAT, and other V&V activities related to subsystems.
  • Managing and executing on-site integration T&C activities (SIT, SPT, trial run, etc.).

B. System Design & Architecture

  • Defining and managing railway system requirements, system architecture, and interaction between subsystems (rolling stock, signaling, tracks, power supply).
  • Selecting appropriate technologies and configurations for new rail projects.
  • Managing interface development by subsystems and coordinating the verification and validation of all interfaces throughout the project lifecycle until final successful resolution.

C. System Integration

  • Ensuring interoperability between different railway subsystems, as well as the interfaces between rolling stock, signaling, and infrastructure.
  • Validating system compatibility with national and international requirements and standards (e.g., EN, NFPA, etc.).

D. Performance Optimization

  • Enhancing railway system efficiency concerning capacity, energy consumption, and operational reliability.

E. Lifecycle Management

  • Managing railway system upgrades and modernization projects.
  • Supporting asset management and maintenance planning to maximize system longevity.

F. Digitalization & Smart Rail Technologies

  • Implementing IoT, AI, and Big Data solutions for predictive maintenance and automation.
  • Working with Digital Twin, Remote Monitoring, and Smart Signaling technologies.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in T&C for railway systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in integration/system engineering for railway systems.
  • Experience in focusing on sustainability in railway systems and infrastructure design, construction, and operation.
  • Expertise in Rolling Stock (Metro, EMUs, DMUs, LRVs), Signaling Systems (ETCS, CBTC, PTC, Interlocking), and Electrification (25kV AC, 750V DC, 3kV DC systems).
  • Familiarity with Track Infrastructure (Standard gauge, High-Speed Rail, Light Rail, Metro) and interface management between hardware, software, and infrastructure.
  • Experience in managing mixed traffic operations (High-speed, freight, commuter trains) and knowledge of CENELEC Standards: EN 50126 (RAMS), EN 50128 (Software), EN 50129 (Safety).
  • Familiarity with ETCS/ERTMS (European Train Control System), IEC 62290 (Urban Rail Control Systems), and UIC, AAR, and FRA Regulations for different railway regions.
  • Skills in Systems Engineering: DOORS, Enterprise Architect; Failure & Safety Analysis: ReliaSoft, FMECA, FTA Tools; Electrical & Mechanical Design: MATLAB, Simulink, CATIA.
  • Project Management & Lifecycle Management knowledge including working with V-Model, Agile, or Waterfall methodologies and managing large-scale railway system deployment projects.
