About the Role
The Protection Relay Programming & Testing Engineer position focuses on MV & LV protection systems. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the entire lifecycle of protection systems, including relay programming, protection setting implementation, logic development, secondary injection testing, functional testing, communication configuration, FAT/SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and final system validation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Protection relay programming, configuration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting for MV and LV protection systems.
  • Utilize strong experience with protection relays from manufacturers including ABB, Siemens, and Schneider Electric.
  • Work with platforms such as ABB Relion, Siemens SIPROTEC, Schneider Easergy/SEPAM, or equivalent.
  • Ensure a strong knowledge of protection schemes, which includes but is not limited to, overcurrent, earth fault, directional protection, under/over-voltage, under/over-frequency, transformer, motor, and busbar protection.
  • Interpret SLDs, protection schematics, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection philosophies.
  • Conduct secondary injection testing, functional testing, trip testing, interlock verification, and end-to-end protection testing.
  • Prepare and review relay setting files, test procedures, test reports, commissioning reports, and protection documentation.
  • Familiarize with OMICRON or equivalent relay test equipment; experience with FAT and SAT preferred.

Core Technical Expertise

  • Strong hands-on experience required in programming, configuration, and maintenance of MV and LV protection systems.
  • Experience in verification of relay settings against approved protection coordination studies.

Communication & Networking Expertise

  • Knowledge of industrial communication networks related to MV/LV protection and control systems.
  • Experience with Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus, Profinet, IEC 61850, and Industrial Ethernet communication.
  • Understand IEC 61850 architecture, including IEDs, Station Bus, Process Bus, GOOSE, MMS, and SCL configuration.
  • Troubleshoot communication issues across the entire chain—from protection relay/IED through network infrastructure, including PLC/RTU, SCADA/EPMS, and higher-level systems.

Control, SCADA & System Architecture

  • Thorough understanding of complete protection, control, and communication system architecture.
  • Experience in integrating protection relays with PLC, RTU, SCADA, EPMS/BMS, and other supervisory control systems.
  • Review communication architecture drawings and network topology.
  • Participate in end-to-end communication testing, including tests for commands, status, alarms, trips, measurements, events, and interlocks.

Desired Candidate Profile

  • Complete Protection Relay Programming & Testing Engineer with hands-on experience in relay software configuration.
  • Strong practical experience with ABB, Siemens, and Schneider electric protection relays, as well as Modbus, Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus, Profinet, and IEC 61850.
  • Experience in MV switchgear manufacturing, system integration, protection engineering, testing, and commissioning is strongly preferred.

Qualifications & Experience

  • B.E./B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering.
  • 7–12 years of relevant experience in protection relay programming, testing, commissioning, and protection/control systems.
  • Experience with MV switchgear, control and relay panels, and electrical protection systems.
