The Center for Smart Engineering Materials (CSEM) at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Research Assistant position to support ongoing research in the design, development, and characterization of innovative and multifunctional construction materials. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of postdoctoral researchers, faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students on a variety of projects, including:
- Investigation of self-healing cementitious materials through chemical and bio-based approaches (e.g., bio-mineralization, encapsulated agents).
- Characterization of self-sensing materials, focusing on their electrical and mechanical behavior under various stressors.
- Contribution to life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of innovative materials to evaluate environmental and economic impacts.
- Support in experimental design, data collection and analysis, and dissemination of findings through reports and publications.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Prior experience in materials synthesis, particularly from industrial byproducts or brine sources, and in construction material characterization.
- Familiarity with life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools and methodologies.
- Exposure to smart materials, self-healing technologies, or sensor-integrated cementitious systems is advantageous.
- Strong laboratory skills, data analysis capabilities, and a collaborative mindset.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with AC impedance spectroscopy, electrical resistivity measurements, or chemical durability testing.
- Basic programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python) for data handling and sensor signal analysis.
- Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
Terms of Employment:
