Position

The Center for Smart Engineering Materials (CSEM) at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Research Assistant position to support ongoing research in the design, development, and characterization of innovative and multifunctional construction materials. This includes self-sensing and self-healing systems with applications in infrastructure, oil and gas, and energy-efficient construction.

The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of postdoctoral researchers, faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students on a variety of projects, including:

  • Investigation of self-healing cementitious materials through chemical and bio-based approaches (e.g., bio-mineralization, encapsulated agents).
  • Characterization of self-sensing materials, focusing on their electrical and mechanical behavior under various stressors.
  • Contribution to life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of innovative materials to evaluate environmental and economic impacts.
  • Support in experimental design, data collection and analysis, and dissemination of findings through reports and publications.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in materials synthesis, particularly from industrial byproducts or brine sources, and in construction material characterization.
  • Familiarity with life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools and methodologies.
  • Exposure to smart materials, self-healing technologies, or sensor-integrated cementitious systems is advantageous.
  • Strong laboratory skills, data analysis capabilities, and a collaborative mindset.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with AC impedance spectroscopy, electrical resistivity measurements, or chemical durability testing.
  • Basic programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python) for data handling and sensor signal analysis.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
