This role covers all aspects of product security, including feature development, vulnerability response, and open-source community participation.

Engineers will collaborate with various teams, customers, and partners, with each product engineering team at Canonical allocating openings for security-oriented software engineers. This includes managing security needs for products like AppArmor and the Ubuntu Security Guide, as well as providing long-term security responses across the operating system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, implement, and document new security features.
  • Lead security-focused initiatives within product engineering teams.
  • Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in open-source software.
  • Contribute to Ubuntu and upstream open-source projects.
  • Audit and analyze source code for vulnerabilities.
  • Integrate new tools into security infrastructure and processes.
  • Achieve and maintain various security certifications.
  • Work on compliance requirements, such as FIPS and Common Criteria certifications.
  • Design hardening automation for Ubuntu.
  • Stay updated on security industry trends and developments.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM.
  • A thorough understanding of common security vulnerabilities and mitigation strategies.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages: C, C++, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, PHP, or JavaScript/Typescript.
  • Experience as a security champion and within a wider Secure Software Development Life Cycle (SSDLC) process.
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge and experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).

Optional Skills:

  • Experience working directly with the Linux kernel.
  • Familiarity with security certifications and compliance standards (FIPS, Common Criteria).
  • Knowledge of cryptographic modules and low-level Linux cryptography APIs.

What We Offer:

  • Geographically adjusted compensation based on experience and performance.
  • Performance-driven annual bonus and regular compensation reviews.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Distributed work environment with in-person team meetings.
  • Additional benefits reflecting our values, including holiday leave and parental leave.

Canonical is an equal opportunity employer, committed to fostering an inclusive workplace. We believe in the value of diversity in creating a better work environment and innovative products.
