As a Senior Engineer – Software Development, you will take ownership of the Java development and delivery of an existing production system operating at a critical client site, while maintaining working proficiency across the full technology stack. The role is responsible for extending and strengthening business logic within the established system architecture, ensuring data integrity and accurate transaction processing across concurrent workloads, and diagnosing as well as resolving performance issues in a live production environment. As a secondary responsibility, you will also contribute to the React frontend when backend priorities permit, supporting full-stack development efforts and overall system enhancement.

Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain services across the stack, with primary ownership of the Java (Spring Boot) backend, within the existing system's established architecture
- Ensure data integrity and correct transaction boundaries across concurrent, high-throughput operations
- Diagnose and resolve concurrency issues, race conditions, and deadlocks in a live production environment
- Profile and tune application performance under real client load, not synthetic benchmarks
- Apply disciplined change management to every release given the system's live, critical status
- Work on the relational database layer (schema changes, query performance, migrations) with production-safe practices
Qualifications
- 5+ years of strong Java development experience, with a deep understanding of enterprise application development, backend architecture, and scalable software solutions.
- Solid grasp of transaction boundaries and data integrity in multi-user systems
- Hands-on experience with Spring Boot for designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend services, APIs, and microservices.
- Strong SQL and relational database experience (schema design, query tuning, migrations) across engines such as MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server
- Track record of diagnosing and fixing performance issues under real production load
- Demonstrated capability to quickly understand, maintain, and enhance existing codebases, including large-scale and business-critical applications with established architectural patterns.
- Experience with ETL and data ingestion tools such as StreamSets, Apache NiFi, or similar dataflow platforms
- Comfortable with the operational side of delivery, including CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and monitoring/observability tools
- Strong grasp of software design principles (SOLID, clean architecture) expected at a senior level
- Practical experience with React, enough to contribute to the frontend when needed
Additional Requirements
- Experience working within an established, live production system rather than greenfield development
- Comfortable following existing architectural patterns and conventions rather than introducing new ones
- Awareness of the change-management discipline a live, critical client deployment demands
- Understanding of how mapping/GIS systems work is a plus
- Familiarity with big data/analytical stores such as Apache Kudu is a plus
- Working knowledge of Python is a plus
- Experience using AI-assisted coding tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) to accelerate delivery across projects, while retaining full ownership and review of what ships
