Position

About the Role
The company is seeking a designer who believes that the most precise technology should also be the most beautiful—not just decorative, but an expression of purpose where every surface, radius, and material choice communicates the essence of the object, its function, and its existence. This position defines how Physical Intelligence manifests in the world.

You will set the visual and tactile language of the company’s hardware, including robots, sensors, and platforms intended for real-world deployment. You will navigate deep engineering constraints, viewing them as opportunities for innovative design, just as the most renowned industrial designers have done throughout history.

What You’ll Do

  • Define the Object
Lead the industrial design for the company’s physical hardware systems from the initial concept through production. Your role is collaborative; you will work closely with engineering to ensure that your design intent survives to the final product. You will develop the complete visual and material language of each item: proportion, surfacing, color, material, and finish (CMF), as well as the logic behind every physical interaction point. Your portfolio will demonstrate objects that feel inevitable; that is the aim.

  • Own the Details
Develop production-ready 3D models, engineering drawings, and CMF specifications, possessing full command over tolerances, material behavior, and manufacturing processes. You understand the implications of surface finishes under varying light conditions, the significance of parting line placement as a design decision, and how the gap between two panels conveys quality before the product is even powered on. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles are integral to your vision.

  • Build It
Manage physical prototypes, progressing from rough form studies to production fidelity models. You will physically evaluate your work, allowing practical constraints such as field environments, demanding conditions, and serviceability requirements to inform your design decisions rather than compromise them.

  • Work at the Intersection
Collaborate directly with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers. Participate in supplier builds, review tooling, and drive necessary corrections in the field. Apply ergonomic and human factors principles to hardware designed for challenging conditions, ensuring that controls, connectors, indicators, and access points are clear and unambiguous.

What You’ll Bring

  • At least 10 years of industrial design experience with a portfolio showcasing physical products that are visually distinctive.
  • A degree in Industrial Design or equivalent demonstrated mastery of hardware design and manufacturing.
  • Full proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360, or equivalent. You will be modeling your own work.
  • A working knowledge of injection molding, sheet metal, CNC, casting, and surface finishing techniques.
  • Hands-on prototyping abilities, with comfort in lab or shop environments to critically evaluate work against functional requirements.
  • A strong design point of view, with the ability to defend and articulate your decisions.
  • Familiarity with IP ratings, thermal management, and environmental sealing.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in designing hardware for robotics, wearables, or edge-deployed devices.
  • Exposure to generative design or AI-assisted design workflows.

The company builds Physical Intelligence systems that function where software alone cannot. The hardware is the core product; it will be seen, touched, deployed, and judged by its aesthetics and feel before anyone refers to a specification sheet. If you design objects that captivate and make people stop, we want to hear from you.
