Senior Software Engineer - Backend

About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the team responsible for the high-traffic consumer surfaces that bring millions of people to the company every month. These surfaces include search, property and location content, and platforms that serve them across multiple countries and languages. This is a hands-on senior role that requires you to design and own services end to end, as well as influence architecture beyond your squad while raising the bar for the engineers around you.

This position is critical since page latency, cache behavior, and data correctness directly affect organic acquisition and revenue. You will work closely with performance metrics and see the impact of your decisions in production within days.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate backend services that power our highest-traffic consumer surfaces.
• Own your work end to end, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, observability, and iterative improvements based on production feedback.
• Develop new services and features in TypeScript (Node.js) while maintaining and evolving existing Go services.
• Work at the system's edges, focusing on caching, CDN behavior, content delivery, and rendering paths, where minor changes can significantly influence cost and performance.
• Build with multiple countries and languages from the start to ensure that content, localization, and market-specific behavior are integral parts of the design process.
• Collaborate with product, SEO, data, and web/mobile engineers to transform requirements into maintainable systems following their initial release.
• Champion operational excellence through monitoring, alerting, incident response, and the continuous improvement of reliability, latency, and infrastructure costs.
• Mentor engineers, conduct thorough design and PR reviews, and help shape our backend standards.

Desired Qualifications

• Minimum of 5+ years of backend engineering experience, specifically working with high-traffic, consumer-facing systems.
• Proficient in TypeScript (Node.js), which is the primary language for all new projects.
• Familiar with Go or have a demonstrated capability to learn it quickly, as existing production services are built in Go, which you will manage alongside continued development.
• Experienced in designing and operating services in a distributed environment, focusing on API design, service boundaries, versioning, and inter-service communication, along with the discretion to know when to merge services.
• Hands-on experience with relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL), caching (Redis), and search technologies (OpenSearch/Elasticsearch), including schema design and performance tuning under real load.
• Production experience on AWS with containerized workloads and a solid understanding of observability elements like metrics, structured logging, distributed tracing, SLOs, and ownership during outages.

Additional Capabilities

• Familiar with event-driven and asynchronous processing (e.g., Kafka, SQS, etc.).
• Understanding edge computing and CDN-level logic (e.g., Lambda@Edge, CloudFront) and multi-region considerations.
• Experience building products that are SEO-driven or highly dependent on organic traffic; you comprehend the significance of crawlability, page performance, and structured data for businesses.
• Knowledgeable in content platforms or headless CMS at scale.
• Experience deploying AI/LLM features in production (e.g., AWS Bedrock), including understanding the latency and cost implications of model calls in user-facing scenarios.
• Familiar with marketplace, classifieds, or other two-sided platform products.
