Senior Systems Engineer - Landing Gear

ABOUT THE ROLE
Senior Systems Engineer - Landing Gear Systems will provide technical ownership of landing gear systems across the UAV development lifecycle, from requirements and system architecture through design, integration, verification and flight testing. The role works closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and suppliers to deliver safe, reliable and certifiable solutions.
Working within the company's aerospace environment, the role offers broad exposure to UAV development and the opportunity to build deep landing gear expertise while developing wider systems engineering and technical leadership capabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
System Design & Architecture

• Define landing gear system requirements and architecture in alignment with overall airframe design and mission requirements.
• Develop technical specifications for landing gear components, including shock absorbers, struts, actuators, wheels, and retraction systems.
• Ensure design life-cycle management in accordance with ARP4754.
• Perform system sizing and configuration trade-off studies based on UAV mission profiles, landing loads, and ground-operation constraints.
• Ensure requirement definition, design processes, verification, and integration activities are established and effectively managed for custom-developed systems, both internally and/or through suppliers.
• Prepare system design verification documentation - System Design Description/Design Data Packages (DDPs).

Integration & Interfacing

• Lead the integration of the landing gear system with structural components, avionics, hydraulic systems, and control systems.
• Define and manage mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic interfaces.
• Develop and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
• Collaborate with airframe design teams to optimize mounting arrangements, center-of-gravity considerations, retraction mechanisms, and maintenance access.
• Resolve system-level interface and integration issues through cross-functional coordination.

Analysis, Verification & Validation

• Conduct and support system-level analyses, including static loads, kinematic, dynamic, and fatigue analyses.
• Develop System Safety Assessments, including Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Preliminary System Safety Assessment (PSSA), while supporting safety engineers as required.
• Coordinate with structural analysis teams to define and assess landing load cases.
• Establish and support system verification and validation activities.
• Support ground and flight testing.

Requirements Management & Compliance

• Develop, manage, and maintain landing gear system requirements and traceability using DOORS or equivalent requirements management tools.
• Ensure requirements are appropriately allocated, verified, and traceable throughout the system development life cycle.
• Ensure compliance with applicable aerospace and defense standards, regulatory requirements, and airworthiness criteria.
• Support internal design reviews and prepare technical documentation.
• Ensure maintenance planning is established for the landing gear system and its components.
• Support component and system obsolescence management.

Supplier & Lifecycle Management

• Evaluate, technically manage, and monitor landing gear suppliers and subcontractors.
• Ensure requirement definition, design, verification, validation, and integration processes are established and maintained for custom-developed systems under supplier development.
• Review and monitor supplier technical deliverables, design activities, and verification evidence.
• Contribute to manufacturing and support strategies for the landing gear system.
• Support lifecycle planning and obsolescence management for landing gear components and systems.

Technical Coordination & Stakeholder Management

• Work closely with mechanical, structural, avionics, flight controls, systems safety, quality, manufacturing, testing, certification, and program teams.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field (Required).

Professional Experience

• 10+ years of experience in aerospace systems engineering, with at least 8 years of direct experience in landing gear design and/or integration.
• Experience working on UAV, aircraft, or rotorcraft programs involving mechanical systems and/or airframe integration.
• Proven experience in safety-critical system design.
• Experience managing system design life-cycle activities.
• Experience with requirements definition, system design, integration, verification, validation, and technical documentation.
• Experience in technical management and monitoring of supplier design and development activities.

Technical Knowledge & Training

• Strong understanding of systems engineering methodologies, including V-model, MBSE, V&V, requirements management, and risk analysis.
• Experience with CAD tools such as CATIA or SolidWorks for packaging and integration activities.
• Proficiency with analysis/modeling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS, or ADAMS.
• Knowledge of hydraulic and electromechanical actuation systems relevant to landing gear.
• Knowledge of system safety, qualification, certification, and environmental qualification processes.
• Knowledge of EMI/EMC compliance requirements.
• Familiarity with configuration management and PLM tools such as Teamcenter, Windchill, or ARAS.
• Knowledge of aerospace and defense standards and regulations, including DO-254, ARP4761, MIL-STD-810H, DO-160, AS9100, GCAA, and/or EASA requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering (Preferred).
• INCOSE Systems Engineering Certification (ASEP/CSEP) (Preferred).
• Training or certification in aircraft structural analysis or landing gear design (Advantageous).
• Awareness of AS9100D and related quality systems (Preferred).
