Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, most notably through its platform, Ubuntu. This role is an opportunity for an "automation-first" technologist with a passion for Linux to join the Information Systems (IS) team at Canonical. As a Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer, you will support and maintain Canonical's IT production services, which are utilized by over 60 million Ubuntu users.

In this position, you will drive operations automation to enhance both private and public cloud environments. Utilizing open source infrastructure as code tools, CI/CD practices, and Canonical’s automation products, you will be responsible for defining infrastructure as code and providing critical feedback to developers on product performance at scale. This includes submitting bugs and collaborating on designs with cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop infrastructure as code practices to enhance automation and improve processes within the IS team.
  • Automate software operations for consistency across both private and public clouds while managing the complexities of distributed systems.
  • Develop new features and enhance the resilience and scalability of Canonical’s cloud and container portfolio.
  • Maintain operational responsibility for Canonical's core services, networks, and infrastructure.
  • Utilize tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch for monitoring and alerting purposes.
  • Collaborate with development teams to design architectural documentation, playbooks, and operational procedures.
  • Provide assistance to globally distributed engineering, operations, and support teams.

Requirements:

  • Experience in defining operations in code, using version control, peer review, and CI/CD.
  • A strong engineering background, including peer-review, unit testing, and Agile methodologies.
  • Proficiency in Python software development with large projects.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
  • Experience administering enterprise Linux servers and a strong understanding of cloud computing concepts.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or a related engineering field.
  • Proficient communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
