We are hiring a Software Engineer - L3 Support for a dynamic engineering role in Linux-based infrastructure and applications. This position covers all layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN, Core networking), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open source applications on top of them.

This role presents an opportunity for someone passionate about Linux and open source to build a career with Canonical, driving success for our customers, community, and the company. You will address critical issues that require upstream bug fixes, working productively at any level of the stack, including the kernel, with a wide range of programming languages.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
  • Maintain close relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
  • Participate in upstream communities and develop bug fixes and backport patches.
  • Review code produced by other engineers and demonstrate good judgment in technical methods.
  • Prioritize work effectively and participate in discussions to improve processes and documentation.
  • Maintain clear and concise technical communication.
  • This role involves working from home with international travel up to 10% for team meetings, events, and conferences.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record in Computer Science, STEM, or similar fields.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • A keen desire to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive into complex issues.
  • Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Interest or willingness to learn about topics such as Ubuntu Linux (kernel/userspace), Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, and others.
  • Strong soft skills; curious, flexible, and self-motivated.

Language Requirements:
Fluency in English is required; additional languages may be beneficial.
