The Canonical Public Cloud team seeks enthusiastic engineers to join as Ubuntu distribution engineers. In this role, you will work closely with the Ubuntu Engineering organization to ensure that cloud-specific technologies, including agents, web servers, databases, and virtualization/containerization stacks, are optimized for public clouds. The team collaborates with major cloud providers such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, IBM, and Oracle to enhance Ubuntu’s performance on their infrastructures.

As a member of the Public Cloud team, you will have the chance to contribute to evolving Ubuntu, maintaining extensive continuous deployment operations to deliver software images to end users. You will collaborate with a distributed team of engineers, ensuring a seamless user experience across the Ubuntu ecosystem.

Work Conditions:
Full-time; Remote with global travel (2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events)

Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Remote)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively within a distributed team.
  • Foster a software ecosystem with a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users.
  • Evaluate contributions from other engineers to maintain high-quality software standards.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, the Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, and commercial customers.
  • Debug issues on open source and team-maintained code.
  • Maintain and package software, including cloud agents and traditional server workloads.

Requirements:

  • Passion for technology and collaboration with skilled professionals.
  • Curiosity, flexibility, articulate communication, and accountability.
  • Value of soft skills; passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated.
  • Interest or experience in public cloud operations or architecture.
  • Familiarity with open source maintenance or contribution.
  • Understanding of reproducibility and testing; comfortable setting up tests in containers or virtual machines.
  • Strong fundamentals in Python.
  • Interest in Linux distribution packaging and package management.
  • Knowledge of containerization and virtualization technologies (e.g., Docker, OCI, VirtualBox, QEMU).
