About the Job: Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, primarily known for our platform, Ubuntu, which is utilized across various enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. As a pioneer in global distributed collaboration, we employ over 1200 colleagues across 75+ countries, with limited office-based roles. The company is founder-led, profitable, and in a growth phase. We're on a mission to build a next-generation private cloud infrastructure that combines KVM, Ceph, and SDN technologies to create a reliable data center-scale cloud for edge and core enterprise deployments. We seek engineering managers with experience in high-quality microservice architectures and high-performance team leadership, coupled with a strong understanding of Linux kernel, virtualisation, storage, and networking. As an engineering manager at Canonical, your technical background will be essential, but your primary responsibility will be to manage an effective team while fostering the development of your colleagues. You will aid their growth as engineers, ensure top-notch work quality, and promote a collaborative culture. Successful candidates will have experience leading engineering teams and possess a deep knowledge of distributed systems and Linux. Key Responsibilities: - Lead a remote team of engineers - Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, and feedback - Manage expectations with other engineering teams and stakeholders - Promote modern software development practices - Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural reviews - Engage with teams at Canonical and the open source community What We Are Looking For: - Proficiency in modern Linux cloud computing technologies (networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes) - Passion for developing and growing talent with a strong track record - Deliver timely, high-quality software - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field - Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills - Experience programming in C and/or Go Work Conditions: - This is a remote position with global travel required for 4 to 6 weeks per year for internal and external events.
