Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, particularly known for our platform, Ubuntu. We are hiring Software Engineering Managers to lead technical teams in the delivery and ongoing support of all Linux kernels for the Ubuntu Linux distribution. This role involves integrating support for the latest hardware, expanding execution environments, and maintaining over 100 active Ubuntu Linux kernels.

We seek either experienced managers of high-performing software development teams or proficient technical leads eager to embrace management responsibilities. You will need to be passionate about Linux and committed to distributing it to millions of users worldwide. As an Engineering Manager, your primary focus will be to help your team grow, work on meaningful projects, and maintain a positive work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a distributed team of software engineers in your geographic region.
  • Take ownership of various aspects of Ubuntu Linux. This includes working with partners to optimize Linux kernels, ensuring compatibility with diverse hardware, and maintaining stringent quality control standards.
  • Address the latest security threats and implement robust process automation for the Linux kernel's build, test, and delivery processes.
  • Collaborate with other teams, the open source community, and commercial partners.

Work Conditions:

  • Fully remote working environment with geographical flexibility.
  • International travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks long).

Requirements:

  • Significant programming experience in C; familiarity with Python, Golang, or similar languages is highly regarded.
  • Substantial experience with operating system kernel internals, preferably Linux.
  • Proven experience managing or leading software engineering teams.
  • Ability to coordinate across diverse technical teams to achieve common objectives.
  • Familiarity with version control systems, ideally git.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with kernel patching and debugging.
  • Strong knowledge of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
  • Background in CI/CD and process automation initiatives.
  • Prior involvement with open source projects.

Language Requirements:

  • Professional written and spoken English is required.
