Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, notably the Ubuntu platform, utilized in various enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are seeking Software Engineering Managers to lead technical teams in the delivery and ongoing support and maintenance of all Linux kernels provided by the Ubuntu Linux distribution.

This role involves overseeing a distributed team of software engineers, focusing on aspects like:

  • Integrating support for cutting-edge hardware into Ubuntu kernels.
  • Expanding execution environments available to Ubuntu.
  • Applying fixes and updates to over 100 active Ubuntu Linux kernels during Stable Release Update cycles.

The ideal candidate will be either an experienced manager of high-performing software development teams or a proficient technical lead keen to assume management responsibilities. A passion for Linux is essential, as well as a desire to be part of its distribution to millions of users worldwide.

Your primary responsibility will be to your team, ensuring they grow as engineers and enjoy their work. Candidates should have significant technical leadership experience and a solid background in software engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a distributed team focused on the delivery of Linux kernels for Ubuntu.
  • Collaborate with silicon or cloud partners to optimize Linux kernels.
  • Maintain stringent quality control standards expected by the Ubuntu user community.
  • Address security threats and exploits to the Linux kernel.
  • Drive process automation for build, test, and delivery of the Linux kernel.

Qualifications:

  • Significant programming experience in C; familiarity with Python, Golang, or similar languages is highly regarded.
  • Substantial experience with operating system kernel internals; Linux experience preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing or leading software engineering teams.
  • Ability to coordinate across multiple teams to achieve common goals.
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with Git.
  • Experience with software packaging formats, ideally within Ubuntu/Debian/Snap.
  • Professional written and spoken English; excellent presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice annually for up to two weeks for company events.
