We are hiring a Software Maintenance Engineer to work in a dynamic and exciting engineering role focused on Linux-based infrastructure and applications across various layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the open source applications running on top of them. This role challenges you to showcase your engineering skills while working on various aspects of Ubuntu and the applications utilized by large enterprise customers.
The role offers a unique opportunity for a technologist passionate about Linux and open source to build a career with Canonical and drive success for our customers, community, and the company. It requires an affinity for open source software, excellent communication skills, and a passion for troubleshooting and resolving technology issues used by millions worldwide. The position involves dealing with critical issues within the open source stack that necessitate upstream bug fixes, allowing engineers to work comprehensively across all software layers.
Responsibilities:
- Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
- Maintain close collaboration with Canonical's Field, Support, and Product Engineering teams.
- Participate in upstream communities.
- Develop bug fixes, backport patches and coordinate with upstream for inclusion.
- Review code produced by other engineers and demonstrate good judgment in technical methods.
- Prioritize work and manage time effectively.
- Contribute to team discussions aimed at improving processes, tools, and documentation.
- Communicate clearly and concisely in a technical manner.
- Work from home and travel internationally up to 10% of the time for team meetings, events, and conferences.
Requirements:
- Exceptional academic track record.
- Background in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
- Experience with Linux and open source software.
- Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Go, C, or C++ in a Linux environment.
- A strong desire to learn new technologies and tackle complex issues.
- Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.
