Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Ubuntu, our platform, is widely used in critical enterprise initiatives, including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are hiring a Software Maintenance Engineer for a dynamic engineering role involving Linux-based infrastructure and applications. This full-time remote position may require up to 10% travel for team meetings, events, and conferences throughout the year, allowing for collaboration in exciting locations worldwide.

As a Software Maintenance Engineer, you will be involved in:

  • Resolving complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software.
  • Maintaining close working relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams.
  • Participating in upstream communities and developing bug fixes.
  • Reviewing code from other engineers and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Engaging in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation.

Requirements:

  • An exceptional academic track record.
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
  • A drive to learn unfamiliar technology and troubleshoot difficult issues.
  • Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Interest in or willingness to learn about technologies such as Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, and more.
