Staff Product Manager, Accounting & Treasury

About the Role
The company is seeking a Staff Product Manager to take ownership of the systems that ensure the company's money movement is accurately reflected in a general ledger trusted by auditors. This encompasses managing the accounting event model, journal entry engine, synchronization with our ERP, reconciliation processes, and related controls. Your work will be instrumental in preparing the company for an IPO. Although this role may not be glamorous and is less visible to those outside of Finance, its importance cannot be overstated; if anything goes wrong, it is immediately noticeable.

The Problem
The company processes millions of transactions across over 120 countries and thousands of bank accounts. Most transactions are booked correctly, but when they aren't, it leads to manual work for the Accounting team at month-end. Issues include:

• Events booking in the wrong period.
• Transactions that do not reverse when an upstream cancellation occurs.
• Delayed or incomplete bank data.
• Accumulation of unexplained balances in clearing accounts.

The current fixes tend to be reactive. We need a proactive solution that addresses the root causes to prevent recurring issues.

What You’ll Own

• Accounting Event Model: Define the creation of journal entries for every product event, including interactions with Finance on assets such as revenue, deferred revenue, foreign exchange, fees, and liabilities.
• Close Process: Reduce the closing period to 7 days. Identify delays in the current process and implement automation for reconciliations and data integrity to minimize manual adjustments.
• Platform to ERP: Ensure that all journal entries generated on our platform are complete, timely, and match records in the ERP each period.
• Reconciliation and Subledger Integrity: Oversee the reconciliation between bank and book accounts, including clearing accounts and intercompany transactions. Investigate discrepancies and resolve them efficiently.
• Controls Implementation: Embed SOX controls into the product to facilitate seamless audit evidence collection during standard operations, eliminating last-minute scrambles.
• Roadmap and Tradeoffs: Collaborate across various departments (Accounting, Controllership, Revenue, Treasury, and Engineering) and product teams to manage the complexity of transaction bookings.

What a Good First Six Months Looks Like

• Ability to explain the journal entry output for any product event.
• Daily mapping of the closing process, identifying key issues causing delays.
• Implementation of fixes for at least two identified problems, resulting in measurable improvements in the closing time.
• Early engagement from Accounting for issues due to previously demonstrated problem-solving capabilities.
• Understanding the application of AI to mitigate traditionally manual workload in your role.

Who You Are

• 7+ years experience in product management, particularly with ledger, accounting, billing, or ERP systems, ideally within fintech, payments, or a fast-growing company.
• Proficient understanding of debits and credits, capable of reading trial balances and navigating entries from event creation to ERP.
• A pragmatic operator with a mindset oriented toward detail and execution in complex systems.
• Ability to write detailed specifications that guide engineers and satisfy the accountants' requirements.
• Comfortable thriving in ambiguous and high-pressure environments, efficiently balancing immediate needs with long-term strategic goals.
• Experience participating in a challenging close, audit, or ERP migration from within.

Nice to Have

• Experience with multi-entity, multi-currency, and intercompany accounting.
• Background in SOX implementation or preparations for IPO.
• Familiarity with NetSuite or dedicated subledger tools.
