We are hiring a System Software Engineer to join our team, which is dedicated to ensuring that the latest innovations in modern programming languages are available to Ubuntu users. This role is an excellent opportunity for software engineers passionate about compilers, runtimes, and toolchains. You should have strong competencies in modern C/C++, Linux distributions, software architectures, and open-source software.

As part of the Ubuntu Foundations Team, you will work on critical toolchains that contribute significantly to Ubuntu's ecosystem. You will be responsible for the integration of GCC and LLVM, making Ubuntu the ideal platform for developing and running C/C++ applications across various environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively with a distributed team.
  • Select, integrate, and package best-of-breed tooling with Ubuntu.
  • Write high-quality code to create new features and debug issues.
  • Review code produced by other engineers and discuss design solutions.
  • Mentor less senior engineers and contribute to design reviews.
  • Participate in global travel for internal and external events (2-4 weeks per year).

Work Conditions:

  • Remote work environment with occasional international travel.
  • The role is open to candidates in the EMEA region.

Requirements:

  • Relevant experience with GCC or LLVM, preferably in cloud-native software and Linux.
  • Experience in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu.
  • Long-time Linux user with a strong academic track record.
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical field or equivalent experience in technology.
  • Strong soft skills, including a passion for technology, effective communication, and a self-motivated work ethic.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events.
