About the Job: Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems for the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely utilized in groundbreaking enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are establishing a new team dedicated to the Python programming language and its ecosystem on Ubuntu. The goal is to deliver an exceptional Python runtime, enhance developer experience, and support tooling within Ubuntu. This role presents an exciting opportunity for a software engineer who is passionate about open-source software, Linux systems, software architectures, and the Python programming language. As part of the Ubuntu Foundations Team, you will work on critical toolchains that contribute to the overall Ubuntu experience. You will leverage your Python expertise to make Ubuntu an optimal platform for developing, distributing, and consuming Python-based software. The role will involve design discussions, mentoring junior engineers, and collaborating with other teams to ensure architectural decisions enhance Ubuntu's performance and user experience. Work Conditions: - Remote work position for candidates located within the EMEA region. - Global travel is required for 2 to 4 weeks a year for internal and external events. Responsibilities: - Collaborate proactively with a distributed team. - Select, integrate, and package top-tier tooling with Ubuntu to improve the developer and operator experience with Python. - Write high-quality code to create new features and debug existing issues. - Review code produced by other engineers. - Discuss ideas and work collaboratively to find effective solutions. Who You Are: - Relevant Python experience, preferably in cloud-native software and Linux. - Experience or interest in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu. - A long-time Linux user with a strong academic background or notable alternative experience. - Passionate, curious, flexible, and accountable. - Excellent soft skills, with a thoughtful and self-motivated approach. Language Requirements: - Proficient in English.
