Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. We are building a new team focused on the Python programming language and its ecosystem on Ubuntu. The team’s goal is to deliver the best possible Python runtime, developer experience, and supporting tooling in Ubuntu. This role is an exciting opportunity for a software engineer passionate about open source software, Linux systems, software architectures, and the Python programming language. You will work on critical toolchains involved in the making of Ubuntu, making it the best platform for developing, distributing, and consuming software built with Python.

As part of the Ubuntu Foundations team, you will have a significant impact on Ubuntu, spanning from Desktop to Server and cloud images. You will collaborate proactively with a distributed team, write high-quality code, debug issues, review code produced by other engineers, and participate in design discussions.

Work Conditions:

  • This role is remote, with a location preference within the EMEA region.
  • Global travel is expected for 2 to 4 weeks a year for internal and external events.
  • The role encompasses a distributed work environment with team sprints in person twice a year.

Requirements:

  • Relevant experience in Python, ideally in the context of cloud-native software and Linux.
  • Interest in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu.
  • A long-time Linux user.
  • An undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about your alternative chosen path.
  • Strong soft skills: passionate, curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable.
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events.
