About the Job:
Ubuntu Linux, the most popular Linux distribution, is seeking to expand its support for System On Chip (SoC) platforms and optimize performance for users. The company is enhancing its silicon enablement squads to respond to increased demands from silicon manufacturers like NVIDIA, Xilinx, MediaTek, and Qualcomm.
The Kernel Team is responsible for building, maintaining, and distributing the Linux kernel for Ubuntu. They are looking for candidates with strong software development skills at the hardware level who can improve the performance of partner silicon through collaboration. Prior experience with the Linux kernel is beneficial, but candidates with backgrounds in other RTOS or bare-metal environments are also encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a globally distributed team.
  • Work closely with silicon vendor partners to integrate platform support into the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by partners, customers, and the community.
  • Deliver silicon-optimized Ubuntu Linux kernel variants.
  • Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing.
  • Submit and review kernel patches in collaboration with maintainers.
  • Identify new performance maximization strategies for partner silicon.

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in English (both written and verbal).
  • Strong programming skills in C.
  • Solid understanding of hardware-level system engineering, including device drivers and BSPs.
  • Experience with git and operating system kernel fundamentals.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks).

Additional Skills (Preferred):

  • Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting.
  • Background with major SoC families.
  • Experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Knowledge of Linux kernel patching and debugging.
  • Understanding of performance optimization for silicon platforms.
