Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in various enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are looking to hire an Ubuntu Security Engineer to join our industry-leading security engineering team and help protect the open source community and Ubuntu users from emerging threats. Candidates are welcomed across all levels of experience, from Graduate to Senior.

In this engineering-focused role, you will monitor, triage, respond to, and document new and existing vulnerabilities in open source software. You will collaborate with internal teams and external partners to identify, prioritize, and coordinate remediation of issues. The role may involve producing security assessments, conducting code reviews, developing internal tools, and engaging with the open-source community.

This position requires international travel at least twice a year, each typically lasting one week. You must be productive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self-motivation.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing, fixing, and testing vulnerabilities in open source packages.
  • Keeping track of vulnerabilities in the Ubuntu ecosystem and leveraging internal tools for research and fixes.
  • Collaborating with the Ubuntu community and upstream developers to develop and exchange vulnerability patches.
  • Auditing source code for vulnerabilities and building features/tools to enhance product security.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Thorough understanding of common categories of security vulnerabilities and techniques for remediation.
  • Familiarity with coordinated disclosure practices and open-source development tools/methodologies.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, PHP, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Strong logic, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively within a multi-cultural, multi-national team.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred) and a commitment to personal accountability.

Language Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English is required.
