We are hiring engineers to work in our Ubuntu Engineering organization—engineers who care deeply about quality, performance, and resilience in software. The role allows for involvement in designing and engineering new software, as well as packaging, integrating, testing, and shipping an incredible catalog of open source software.

Key teams responsible for shipping Ubuntu include:

  • Foundations: Maintaining foundational software such as architectures, package managers, and core utilities.
  • Server: Leading the design and evolution of our Ubuntu Server distribution.
  • Desktop: Driving the future of Ubuntu Desktop and a suite of modern applications.
  • Debcrafters: Maintaining the overall health of the Ubuntu archive.

Engineers may work on the following areas:

  • Development: Designing, building, and shipping foundational systems software in Rust, Go, Flutter, and Python.
  • Architecture: Integrating open source from boot firmware to cloud applications.
  • Packaging: Shipping software in the distribution through Debian and Snap packaging.
  • Automation: Maintaining the machinery responsible for building, testing, and shipping Ubuntu.
  • Distro Engineering: Maintaining and evolving a Linux distribution and its repositories.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
  • Demonstrated passion for open source software.
  • Significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++.
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with Linux distributions and distribution engineering.
  • Experience with software packaging and distribution mechanisms.
  • Understanding of build systems and toolchains, including cross-compilation.
  • Performance or Security Engineering experience.
