We are seeking engineers for the Ubuntu Engineering organization who are passionate about quality, performance, and resilience in software. Ideal candidates will possess expertise in software design and engineering, as well as packaging, integrating, testing, and shipping the extensive catalog of open source software available in Ubuntu repositories.
As an Ubuntu Software Engineer, you may work in one of the following key areas:
- Foundations: Maintenance of foundational software such as architectures, package managers, compilers, bootloaders, and core utilities.
- Server: Leading the design and future of the Ubuntu Server distribution.
- Desktop: Driving innovations in Ubuntu Desktop, including Ubuntu Core Desktop and modern applications.
- Debcrafters: Responsible for the overall health of the Ubuntu archive.
You will have the chance to work on various categories such as Development (designing and building software), Architecture (integration of open source software), Packaging (software shipping), Automation (maintaining build machinery), and Distro Engineering (evolution of the Linux distribution).
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and ship software using Rust, Go, and Python.
- Package and integrate open source software into Ubuntu repositories.
- Debug system-level issues and deliver robust solutions.
- Author and improve technical and community documentation.
- Contribute to upstream open source projects and collaborate in a distributed team environment.
- Mentor colleagues and improve processes for better efficiency.
Required Qualifications:
- Exceptional academic track record and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM (or a compelling alternative path).
- Demonstrated passion for open source software.
- Significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++.
- Professional written and spoken English.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Experience with Linux distributions and distribution engineering.
- Familiarity with software packaging and distribution mechanisms.
- Understanding of build systems and toolchains, including cross-compilation.
- Experience in Performance or Security Engineering.
