The Ubuntu Engineering organisation seeks talented engineers who are passionate about quality, performance, and resilience in software. These engineers will be involved in designing, engineering, integrating, testing, and shipping a wide range of open source software. The role provides opportunities to work within various teams, including Foundations, Server, Desktop, and Debcrafters, addressing both foundational systems and the future evolution of Ubuntu.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and ship new foundational systems software and applications using languages such as Rust, Go, and Python.
  • Engineer the integration of open source components from boot firmware to cloud application deployment.
  • Engage in packaging, testing, and uploading open source software to the Ubuntu repositories.
  • Debug system-level issues and deliver robust solutions to enhance quality.
  • Collaborate with a globally distributed team and mentor colleagues for skill development.
  • Contribute to technical and community documentation and participate in upstream open source projects.

Work Conditions:

  • The role offers a remote work environment with the requirement to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).

Language Requirements:

  • Professional written and spoken English is essential.

What We are Looking For:

  • An exceptional academic track record and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a STEM field.
  • A drive for excellence and a demonstrated passion for open source software.
  • Significant experience with programming languages including Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with Linux distributions and distribution engineering.
  • Understanding of software packaging and distribution mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with build systems and toolchains, including cross-compilation.
