Position

This is an opportunity to run a field engineering team, helping customers understand and implement Canonical's open source solutions in public clouds and their own data centers. The team will work across the entire spectrum of cloud offerings, from Ubuntu to virtualization and private cloud, Kubernetes, and sophisticated open source solutions like MLops platforms and data platforms. As we expand into new industries such as telecommunications, finance, healthcare, and media, we will design and develop new open-source solutions to meet those needs.

Cloud Field Engineering Managers should be exemplary engineers who are comfortable troubleshooting technical issues and engaging in technical presales conversations. While they contribute to project delivery, their primary role is to guide the team's direction, focus, and delivery. We focus on growing management skills and training engineers interested in soft skills to be managers.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of Field engineers, from graduate to senior levels, in Presales and Professional Services.
  • Solve customer problems by promoting our technologies and acting as a trusted advisor.
  • Work remotely within a single major time zone.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback.
  • Identify and measure team health indicators.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Represent your team and products to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and promote excellent engineering and organizational practices.
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Collaborate with other leaders as part of the leadership team.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies including Kubernetes, Openstack, AWS, GCP, Azure, Ceph, etc.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux and networking.
  • Experience in technical presales.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • A dynamic personality willing to engage in various projects.
  • Passionate about developing and mentoring others.
  • Organized and able to ensure timely, high-quality results.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40% of the time for company events and customer meetings.

Additional Skills:

  • Proficiency in a second language, preferably Spanish or French.
  • Knowledge of Python.
  • Experience collaborating with external partners and internal teams to provide feedback and develop engineering roadmaps.
