Position

This is an opportunity to run a Professional Services (Field Engineering) team, helping customers understand and implement Canonical's open source solutions in public clouds and in their own data centers. The role encompasses a wide range of cloud offerings, from Ubuntu to virtualization, private cloud, Kubernetes, and sophisticated open source solutions such as MLops platforms and data platforms. As we expand into new industries like telecommunications, finance, healthcare, and media, we aim to design and develop innovative open source solutions.

Engineering Managers should excel as engineers and feel comfortable troubleshooting technical issues and engaging in technical presales conversations with customers. They contribute to project delivery while shaping the team's direction and focus. The role emphasizes the development of management skills among engineers interested in progressing into management roles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, from graduate to senior levels.
  • Work remotely within a major time zone, ensuring team collaboration.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback to team members.
  • Identify and measure team health indicators.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Represent the team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and promote excellent engineering practices.
  • Manage progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Actively participate in technical presales to help meet departmental goals.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies (Kubernetes, OpenStack, AWS, GCP, Azure, Ceph).
  • Practical knowledge of Linux and networking.
  • Experience in technical presales.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Passion for developing and growing people.
  • Experience in leading, coaching, and mentoring engineers.
  • Ability to ensure timely, high-quality results.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40% of the time for company events and customer meetings.

Additional Skills:

  • Proficiency in a second language such as Spanish or French is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Python.
  • Experience collaborating with external partners and internal teams.
