Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems for the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, plays a crucial role in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We work with the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, as well as industry leaders across various sectors.

We are looking for exceptional software engineers experienced with virtualisation and container technology. Ideal candidates will have expertise in Go, Rust, or C/C++. You will be contributing to next-generation open source virtual machine monitors (VMM), container technologies, and related open source networking and storage.

This position is fully remote and full-time, with an opportunity to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).

Key projects include:

  • RustVMM: Developing a new hypervisor for Linux focused on performance, security, and operability.
  • Rockcraft: Creating a portfolio of high-quality Docker images for the open source community.
  • LXD: Managing system containers and virtual machines on platforms like Ubuntu.
  • Kubernetes: Building and enhancing MicroK8s and Charmed Kubernetes.
  • OpenStack: Delivering Charmed OpenStack and related technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and specify new features, building consensus on approach.
  • Engage with upstream communities in your area of expertise.
  • Conduct security analyses and reviews.
  • Monitor performance benchmarks to optimise products.
  • Collaborate proactively with a distributed team.
  • Write and debug high-quality code.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or demonstrable alternative path.
  • Experience in open source virtualisation or container technology.
  • Proficiency with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.

Additional Skills:

  • Performance engineering and security experience is valued.
