Position

About the Job:
Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems for the global enterprise and technology markets, most notably through our platform, Ubuntu. As we expand the Metal as a Service (MAAS) team, we are seeking an Engineering Manager. The mission of MAAS is to deliver an exceptional solution for building and running private bare-metal infrastructure, providing a cloud-style on-demand API for physical server provisioning, network configuration, and storage.

We are looking for engineering managers who possess experience in high-quality software development and high-performance team leadership, as well as extensive knowledge of Linux on physical servers, Linux storage, and data center networking capabilities. MAAS components encompass the entire software stack, and successful candidates will be fluent in various layers, anticipating the impact of design and engineering decisions within a complex distributed system.

Responsibilities include leading a distributed team of engineers, developing talent through mentoring and coaching, managing expectations with stakeholders, advocating for modern software development practices, participating in engineering processes, and collaborating with broader teams. The role also involves traveling to global events for approximately four to six weeks per year.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record and a technical undergraduate degree.
  • Confidence to share ideas and feedback proactively.
  • Proven leadership and commitment to mentorship.
  • Passion for technology shown through personal projects.
  • Professional written and spoken English, with strong presentation skills.
  • Deep understanding of Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events.
  • Experience in modern Linux cloud computing technologies such as networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes.
  • Programming experience in Python and Go.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • An appreciation for diversity within a multi-cultural organization.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Proficiency in TypeScript using modern web frameworks (React, Angular, Svelte, Vue).

Compensation and Benefits:
Canonical considers geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation. Additional benefits include:

  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Annual compensation review and performance-driven bonuses.
  • Paid Maternity and Paternity leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities to travel for company events.

Canonical is an equal opportunity employer, fostering a workplace free from discrimination, where all identities are considered fairly.
