About the Job:
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, specializing in the Ubuntu platform. Our mission with MAAS ("Metal as a Service") is to offer a cloud-style on-demand API for physical server provisioning, network configuration, and storage in building and running private bare-metal infrastructures.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to expand the MAAS team. This role requires experience in high-quality software development and team leadership, along with deep familiarity with Linux on physical servers, Linux storage, and data center networking capabilities. The ideal candidate will lead a distributed team of engineers, focusing on talent development through coaching and mentoring while setting expectations with engineering teams and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a distributed team of engineers.
  • Advance modern software development practices.
  • Engage in code and architectural reviews.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams and the open source community.
  • Travel for internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year.

Requirements:

  • Strong academic background with a technical undergraduate degree.
  • Proven track record in achieving outstanding results and mentoring.
  • Proficiency in professional written and spoken English.
  • Experience with Linux (preferably Debian or Ubuntu).
  • Understanding of modern Linux cloud computing technologies (networking, storage, containers, K8s).
  • Programming experience in Python and Go.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Typescript and modern web frameworks (React, Angular, Svelte, Vue).
