As an Engineering Manager at Canonical, you will lead a distributed team of engineers, focusing on effective team management, development, and delivering high-quality work. Your primary responsibilities include developing and reviewing code, promoting a productive work environment, and facilitating technical delivery. You will collaborate closely with other Engineering Managers, product managers, and architects to create an engineering roadmap with ambitious yet achievable goals.
You will help your team grow as engineers, ensure they have meaningful work, and maintain a positive influence on workplace culture. Your role involves regular reflection with your team on strategy and execution, conducting one-on-one meetings, measuring team health indicators, and engaging with the broader community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a distributed team of engineers and its MLOps/Analytics portfolio
- Organize team processes to achieve objectives
- Mentor and grow direct reports
- Review code and provide architectural leadership
- Attend conferences to represent Canonical
- Commit to healthy engineering practices, documentation, and quality optimization
Requirements:
- Proven experience in software delivery with an emphasis on Python development and open-source contributions
- Understanding of the machine learning space, including design and implementation of MLOps solutions
- Exceptional academic background from high school and preferably university
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
Preferred Skills:
- Hands-on experience with machine learning libraries and/or cloud technology (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
- Familiarity with container technologies (Docker, LXD, Kubernetes)
- Passion for software quality and testing
- Experience working on distributed teams, particularly in open source projects
