Canonical is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Solutions Engineering team with the mission to transform software operations through next-generation infrastructure-as-code. This role involves leading a regional software engineering team focused on developing efficient bare-metal operations for high-performance computing, private cloud, data lakes, AI/ML, and analytics.

The Solutions Engineering team works closely with the managed infrastructure operations team, which supports numerous private OpenStack clouds and Kubernetes clusters globally. This collaboration enhances our infra-as-code products based on real-world experiences. The team primarily uses Python to create open-source automation capabilities that simplify operations for users building on Ubuntu.

As an Engineering Manager, your key responsibility is to support and enable the growth of your team members. You will leverage your software development background to provide technical leadership, influence culture, and steer your team toward successful execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a remote team of Python engineers across global locations.
  • Manage hiring, coaching, mentoring, and offer hands-on career development.
  • Contribute directly to code quality by demonstrating sound engineering principles.
  • Plan and track progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Set and manage expectations with engineering and operations teams.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate for modern, agile software development practices.
  • Develop and promote excellent engineering practices.
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture.
  • Participate in leadership collaboration across the organization.
  • Occasional global travel (up to 10%).

Who You Are:

  • Passionate about developing others with a proven track record.
  • Experienced in agile software development.
  • A strong leader, coach, and mentor for software developers, particularly in Python.
  • Knowledgeable in cloud computing concepts and technologies.
  • Comfortable managing Linux servers, including their storage and networking.
  • Experienced in software automation.
  • Organized and committed to delivering high-quality software on time.
  • A lifelong learner.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • University degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of modern infrastructure, especially OpenStack or Kubernetes.
  • Experience in both operations and software development.
  • Familiarity with challenges in large-scale, multi-cloud environments.
  • Expertise in Go programming language.
