Position

Canonical partners with leading silicon vendors to optimize Ubuntu on the latest platforms, integrating next-generation features and performance enhancements. We are looking for Engineering Managers who possess a passion for operational systems, cutting-edge hardware, and open-source technologies. You will lead engineering teams focused on enabling and optimizing Ubuntu across various architectures including x86, ARM, RISC-V, s390x, and POWER systems.

We seek Engineering Managers who are also accomplished developers, comfortable reviewing patches and software design specs. You will play a critical role in developing engineering talent, representing your team and product technically, and fostering collaboration with other teams and customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a diverse team of engineers, from graduate to senior levels.
  • Oversee commercial engagements with timely delivery on project milestones.
  • Act as the technical lead on complex customer engagements involving complete system architectures from cloud to edge.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Optimize Ubuntu for the latest hardware platforms.
  • Contribute to code reviews and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with other leaders as an active part of the leadership team.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or an alternative compelling narrative.
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python.
  • Experience with Debian/Ubuntu or other distro packaging.
  • A passion for Linux and operational systems software, including kernel and virtualization stacks.
  • Experience managing software engineering teams and working with customers.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year for company events, up to two weeks each.

Desired Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of x86, ARM, RISC-V architectures.
  • Familiarity with build systems, toolchains, and cross-compilation.
  • Experience with board bring-up and validation.
  • Performance engineering, benchmarking, and profiling experience.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as virtualization stacks, Docker, OCI containers, K8s.
