About the Job: Ubuntu Server is the world's most popular Linux distribution on cloud and bare metal. In this role, you will manage the team delivering the Ubuntu Server Distribution globally. Ubuntu aims to offer the latest, best, free software components in an easy-to-use and highly reliable form, building on the technical excellence of Debian while focusing on the needs of large, innovative customers.

This position is ideal for a leader passionate about strong teams, open source software, and Ubuntu. You will be building a rewarding and meaningful career while collaborating with some of the best and brightest in technology at Canonical, a growing international software company.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers.
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career development.
  • Collaborate with Product Management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu.
  • Effectively manage expectations with engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate for and advance modern, agile software development practices.
  • Promote great engineering and organizational practices while fostering a healthy, collaborative culture.
  • Participate as an active member of the leadership team.
  • Engage with teams at Canonical, the open-source community, and commercial partners.
  • Oversee the quality of the Ubuntu Server image family and plan/deliver server features.
  • Work from home with global travel for up to 6 weeks per year for internal and external events.

Who You Are:

  • Passionate about developing and growing your team, with a strong track record.
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about software development.
  • 3+ years of experience in leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software developers; experience with distributed teams is a plus.
  • Committed to delivering high-quality software on time.
  • Experience in an agile development environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or similar discipline.
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills in English.
  • Familiarity with a modern GNU/Linux distribution (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Practical experience with at least one of Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or Amazon Web Services.
