Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. The company is renowned for its platform, Ubuntu, which is extensively utilized in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Canonical serves a diverse clientele including top public cloud and silicon providers.

We are looking for a Web Engineering Manager who will work collaboratively with various teams, including product managers and engineering teams, to deliver reliable, scalable, and delightful user experiences for users of Canonical products. The primary responsibility of the Engineering Manager is supporting team members in their growth as web engineers and ensuring they are engaged in valuable work at Canonical.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to engineering goals while demonstrating sound engineering principles.
  • Estimating work, setting goals, and meeting them.
  • Designing and implementing well-tested and documented software using Web technologies or Flutter.
  • Debugging and resolving issues encountered by users.
  • Participating in code and architectural reviews and collaborating on technical specifications.
  • Contributing to technical documentation and seeking improvements to engineering and operations practices.
  • Deploying and operating team-developed services.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge and passion for web and software development.
  • Exceptional academic background (undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM preferred).
  • Experience designing and writing high-quality web technologies.
  • Proficiency in Typescript, React, or Flutter.
  • Familiarity with Linux, preferably Debian or Ubuntu.
  • Professional written and spoken English skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a result-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).

Nice-to-have Skills:

  • Experience with container technologies (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of REST API design, performance engineering, and security considerations.
