About the Job:
Ubuntu Linux, the most popular Linux distribution globally, is experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand. The Canonical Kernel Team, responsible for the build, maintenance, and distribution of the Linux kernel for Ubuntu, is looking for individuals with a deep technical background in operating system kernels and distributions as well as strong leadership skills.

We are seeking exceptionally talented technology experts and industry veterans to lead the architecture, implementation, and ongoing delivery of kernel engineering. Key responsibilities include:

  • Driving engagements with key Silicon and Cloud partners for optimal solutions
  • Mitigating common vulnerabilities and exposures for Ubuntu Linux and enhancing kernel hardening
  • Architecting improvements for performance and reliability of Ubuntu Linux
  • Streamlining packaging and distribution of third-party components for optimal end-user experience
  • Developing new means to deliver Ubuntu Linux at scale while meeting strict quality standards

The ideal candidate will possess strong people skills and the ability to lead engineers, along with a collaborative spirit to work with external teams for effective delivery.

Requirements:

  • Well-organized and motivated self-starter who thrives in remote environments
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal
  • Expert understanding of the C programming language
  • Demonstrated expertise in a *nix-based operating system kernel and distribution (Linux experience preferred but not mandatory)
  • Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting
  • Strong grasp of git version control system
  • Ability to travel internationally at least twice a year for company events

Additional Skills (Preferred):

  • Background in RTOS and real-time performance analysis
  • Experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging
  • Experience with kernel patching and debugging
  • Familiarity with device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering
