Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, particularly known for our platform, Ubuntu. Ubuntu is extensively used in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our clients include top-tier public cloud and silicon providers as well as industry leaders across various sectors. As an Engineering Manager on the Foundations team, you will lead the engineering team responsible for essential components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, and networking/storage configuration and management. This role is fast-paced, highly technical, and operates at the core of Linux server systems.

You will be expected to inspire and lead a team of engineers, fostering a strong culture and facilitating technical delivery. This position requires a deep understanding of Linux and Ubuntu, as well as a passion for exceptional leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow a team of distributed engineers.
  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active and hands-on leadership.
  • Plan, estimate, and execute engineering projects.
  • Collaborate with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu.
  • Partner with cross-functional leadership teams.
  • Drive the advancement of the latest software development practices.
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with company values.
  • Engage with other teams to ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps.
  • Work remotely while participating in in-person company sprints held twice a year for 1-2 weeks.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm).
  • Proven experience managing or leading a team of software engineers.
  • High-quality software engineering knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, or toolchains (Java/GCC/Python/Rust/Go, ARM and/or RISC-V).
  • Engagement with open source communities and processes.

Work Conditions:

  • Fully remote work environment with two in-person sprints annually.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
