Our technologies are widely used in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We have a diverse global workforce with 1100+ colleagues in over 75 countries, and most roles are remote, with teams meeting in person twice to four times a year.

We are hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our engineering team responsible for the essential components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration. This fast-paced role operates at the core of Linux server systems, where you will drive Ubuntu's development while collaborating with cross-functional leadership teams. In this role, you will lead and inspire a distributed team of engineers, guide technical delivery, positively influence team culture, and engage with other teams at Canonical to ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps. This is a position for someone with extensive Linux experience and a passion for exceptional leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow a team of distributed engineers.
  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active leadership.
  • Plan, estimate, and execute project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu.
  • Drive the advancement and adoption of modern software development practices.
  • Foster a healthy and collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm).
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading software engineering teams.
  • High-quality software engineering knowledge in areas such as Linux system architecture, boot processes, and toolchains (Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go).
  • Engagement with open source communities and processes.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation that reflects geographical location, experience, and performance.
  • Annual compensation review and performance-driven bonuses.
  • Benefits including a personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year, annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave, and an Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities to travel and meet colleagues during company events.

Canonical is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and seek to foster a workplace free from discrimination. All applications will be considered fairly, regardless of identity.
