About the Job:
Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, plays a vital role in various enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customer base includes top public cloud providers and industry leaders across multiple sectors. As a pioneer in global distributed collaboration, Canonical boasts a team of over 1200 colleagues in more than 75 countries, predominantly in remote roles, with opportunities to meet in person for strategic alignment twice to four times a year.

We are seeking a Senior Site Reliability / GitOps Engineer to join our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an "automation-first" technologist with a passion for Linux and a desire to drive success with Ubuntu and open-source products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive the development of automation and GitOps in your team as an embedded tech lead.
  • Collaborate closely with the IS architect to ensure alignment with IS architecture vision.
  • Design and architect services that the IS team can offer as products.
  • Develop practices around Infrastructure as Code (IaC), driving automation and improving processes.
  • Automate software operations for consistency across private and public clouds, considering distributed systems complexities.
  • Maintain operational responsibility for Canonical's core services, networks, and infrastructure.
  • Develop skills in troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance investigation.
  • Set up and maintain observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch.
  • Provide assistance to globally distributed engineering, operations, and support teams.
  • Share knowledge and best practices with team members through mentorship and collaborative work.
  • Handle time-critical escalations effectively.

Qualifications:

  • A modern approach to hosting architecture, emphasizing Infrastructure as Code across private and public clouds.
  • A product mindset focused on developing products rather than mere solutions.
  • Proficiency in Python with experience on large software projects.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or other container orchestration systems.
  • Proven experience managing and deploying cloud infrastructure as code.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
  • Experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
  • Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related engineering field.
  • Proficient in English communication (written and verbal).
  • Motivated to troubleshoot technical issues from kernel to web and willing to seek help when needed.
  • Adaptable and quick to learn new technologies.
  • Passionate about open-source technologies, particularly Ubuntu or Debian.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation, revisited annually with potential bonuses.
  • Distributed work environment and in-person team sprints.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Annual compensation review and recognition rewards.
  • Generous leave policies, including maternity and paternity leave.
  • Team Member Assistance Program & Wellness Platform.
  • Opportunity for travel and long-haul company events.

Canonical is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. We value various experiences and perspectives and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
