Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives across various sectors including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Canonical's Ubuntu Engineering Server Team seeks open source enthusiasts to help build the distro of the future by maintaining and packaging a wide variety of software including web servers, databases, and virtualization/containerization stacks.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Ubuntu. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with a distributed team, evaluate contributions to maintain high-quality software standards, and own the maintenance of Ubuntu Server packages.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively within a distributed team.
  • Foster a software ecosystem with a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users.
  • Evaluate contributions of other engineers to maintain high-quality software standards.
  • Shape the future of Ubuntu with new ideas and advise on ongoing work.
  • Collaborate with other teams in the Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, and commercially supported customers.
  • Own the maintenance of Ubuntu Server packages, including but not limited to traditional server workloads, virtualization, and containers.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for technology and collaboration with brilliant people.
  • Interest or experience in open source maintenance or contributions.
  • Ability to replay complex workloads and systems; capable of writing detailed test plans and reproducibility steps.
  • Proficient in multiple programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Rust, Go, Ruby, and PHP.
  • Experience in packaging in one or more ecosystems (e.g., Python wheels, Rust Crates, deb, rpm).
  • Experience using and creating containers and virtual machines.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or related field (or equivalent professional experience of 5+ years).

Location: Jiddah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia (Remote)

Work Conditions:

  • Remote, full-time
  • Global travel required (2 to 4 weeks per year) for internal and external events
