Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is extensively used in cutting-edge enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We serve some of the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, as well as industry leaders in various sectors. The company promotes global distributed collaboration, operating with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries, with minimal office roles. Team members meet two to four times yearly in person in various locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

We are hiring a Site Reliability Engineer to advance next-gen operations at scale, utilizing pure Python infrastructure-as-code from bare metal to containers and applications. The role aims to perfect enterprise infrastructure DevOps, as we manage numerous private cloud, Kubernetes, and application clusters for our clients across both physical and public cloud environments. We are committed to elevating the capabilities of automation through a universal operator pattern and model-driven operations.

To thrive in this role, you should see automation as a fundamental software engineering problem and have a scientific approach to operations driven by metrics and code. You will be responsible for learning the entire tech stack, from bare metal networking and kernel to serverless and open-source applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Employ Python software engineering skills within the operations domain.
  • Architect and run OpenStack, Kubernetes, and software-defined storage.
  • Enable DevSecOps for applications running on this infrastructure.
  • Gain experience across a broad range of cloud technologies and stay updated with the latest open-source infrastructure capabilities.

What We Are Looking For:

  • A degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Experience with Linux, particularly in networking and storage.
  • Proficiency in Python software development.
  • Operational experience in a high-pressure environment with mission-critical services.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills alongside curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with OpenStack or Kubernetes deployment/operations.
  • Familiarity with public or private cloud management.

Benefits Offered:

  • Competitive compensation reviewed annually based on location, experience, and performance.
  • Performance-driven annual bonuses or commissions.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Annual holiday leave and maternity/paternity leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues.
  • Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person.
  • Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events.
