Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are hiring a Software Engineer - L3 Support to work in a dynamic engineering role involving Linux-based infrastructure and applications across all layers of the stack, including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph and Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and the applications running on top of them.

This position is an opportunity for a technologist with a passion for Linux and open source to build a career with Canonical and drive success for our customers and the community. You will be responsible for resolving complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes, maintaining close working relationships with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams, and participating in upstream communities.

Work Conditions: Full-time, remote, with international travel up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events, and conferences.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Troubleshooting and driving issues to resolution
  • Developing bug fixes, backporting patches, and working with upstream for inclusion
  • Reviewing code produced by other engineers
  • Participating in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar
  • Experience with Linux and open source software
  • Proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux
  • Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and tackle challenging issues
  • Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Interest in or willingness to learn about Ubuntu Linux, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, PostgreSQL, Mongo, Debian packaging, and distributed systems.
