Position

Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. The company collaborates with world-class partners including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, IBM, and Oracle to optimize Ubuntu for their infrastructure.

The Canonical Public Cloud team is looking for enthusiastic engineers to serve as Ubuntu distribution engineers. In this role, you will work closely with the Ubuntu Engineering organization to optimize technologies such as cloud-specific agents, web servers, databases, and virtualization and containerization stacks for public clouds. As a part of the Public Cloud team, you will contribute to building Ubuntu Server for cloud environments, maintaining extensive continuous deployment operations to deliver images to end users. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with top engineers in the field as you help evolve Ubuntu.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively within a distributed team.
  • Foster a software ecosystem with a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users.
  • Evaluate contributions of other engineers to maintain high-quality software standards.
  • Collaborate with other teams in the Ubuntu and Debian communities and with commercially supported customers.
  • Debug issues on open-source code and team-maintained code.
  • Maintain and package software such as cloud agents and traditional server workloads.

Work Conditions:

  • Work from home with global travel expected 2 to 4 weeks for internal and external events.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.

  • Distributed work environment with team sprints in person twice a year.

Requirements:

  • Strong fundamentals in Python.
  • Interest or experience in public cloud operations or architecture.
  • Interest or experience in open-source maintenance or contribution.
  • Understanding of basic reproducibility, testing steps, and package management.
  • Interest in containerization and virtualization technologies such as Docker and LXD.
