Position

Canonical is a pioneering provider of open source software and operating systems, renowned for its leading platform, Ubuntu. Ubuntu is widely used in transformative enterprise initiatives encompassing public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Canonical collaborates closely with world-class public cloud providers, such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, IBM, and Oracle, to optimize Ubuntu for their infrastructures.

The Canonical Public Cloud team is seeking enthusiastic engineers to contribute as Ubuntu distribution engineers. This role involves working closely with both partners and the Ubuntu Engineering organization to ensure that cloud-specific technologies and tools are optimized for an enhanced operating experience for users. As part of the Public Cloud team, you will play a key role in evolving Ubuntu Server for various cloud environments, ensuring high-quality software standards while maintaining a collaborative relationship with the broader Ubuntu and Debian communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaboratively work within a distributed team to foster a seamless software ecosystem for all Ubuntu users.
  • Evaluate contributions from other engineers to uphold high-quality software standards.
  • Debug issues in open source and team-maintained code.
  • Collaborate with teams in the Ubuntu community and support customers and upstream projects.
  • Maintain and package software such as cloud agents, traditional server workloads, etc.

Work Conditions:

  • Fully remote work with 2 to 4 weeks of global travel for internal and external events each year.

  • Interest or experience in public cloud operations or architecture.
  • Understanding of open source maintenance or contribution.
  • Basic reproducibility and testing skills; comfortable setting up test systems in containers or virtual machines.
  • Proficiency in Python and a fundamental understanding of package management and dependency resolution.
  • Interest in containerization, virtualization, and modern software development practices.
